Fundraising with Scrip

Why Fundraising?
In 2008 the Zion Church building had two "bouts with mother nature." In early summer, the flooding seen across much of the Mid-west took it's toll on the lower fellowship and Sunday School area requiring extensive repairs, cleanup, mold-mildew removal and re-grading to improve site drainage; and again just before the 2008 Christsmas season a serious structural flaw was identified that required temporarily reinforcing roof supports until an expensive perminant repair can be made. Repairs are necessary to enable continuing our church transformation goals of community outreach and spiritual growth. Special fundraising and borrowing will be necessary to make the necessary repairs.

What is Scrip?
When people supporting our fundraising effort purchase scrip, they're purchasing negotiable gift certificates that are used just like cash. The scrip is issued by national and local retailers where many already shop. These merchants want to support non-profit organizations, and in return ask you to support them by shopping with scrip at their stores. Your organization members can use scrip to purchase everyday items like food, clothing, and other essentials; and with every purchase, they earn revenue for the organization.

How does Scrip Generates Revenue?
The Great Lakes Scrip center (www.GLScrip.com) acts on behalf of our church and other non-profit organizations to purchase large amounts of scrip from grocery stores, department stores, and other retailers. Because the scrip is purchased with cash up front, the participating retailers offer a substantial discount. Your organization buys the scrip from Great Lakes Scrip Center at a discount, and re-sells the certificates to your organization members for full face value. The bulk of the discount - from two to fifteen percent or more - is retained by our organization as revenue.
